We built the place we were looking for.

A living network for people redesigning life, work, technology and community on foundations they control.

How it started

Mycelium Hub was co-founded by Marcela Campuzano Otero and Milan Holzapfel in 2021, in Asphyttan, Värmland, in the Swedish countryside.

It grew out of something we wanted for ourselves. After years on the corporate track, we wanted a place to rethink work and life alongside other people doing the same. We could not find one, so we built it.

The hub became a home for retreats, workshops and gatherings, and for the slower time that real change needs. Over the years, we hosted 400+ people in person. Many arrived in the middle of a transition: burnout, a new kind of work, a move, or bigger questions about purpose. They stayed for the work, the conversations, the shared meals and the people.

Marcela and Milan

Marcela and Milan met in Stockholm. They went on to build Mycelium Hub together.

Marcela Campuzano Otero

Marcela Campuzano Otero

Marcela Campuzano Otero is a communicator and organisational change practitioner with more than two decades of experience bringing people together and leading complex work across organisations and countries.

Originally from Colombia, she has lived between Canada and Sweden. Her background spans journalism, communications and technology, with experience across public and private sectors, community initiatives and distributed teams. She studied organisational communication and how organisations change at the Université de Montréal.

Her work has taken her from telecommunications and fibre-optic networks to the relationships and structures that help communities grow. At Mycelium Hub, she brings together communication, project leadership and community building. She produces Spore Journeys and helps people make sense of change and turn new directions into practical next steps.

Milan Holzapfel

Milan Holzapfel

Milan Holzapfel is a systems thinker, community builder and practical technologist who builds the structures that help people and communities work well.

With roots in Germany and New Zealand, he has also spent several years in Sweden. Cross-border moves and career reinventions have shaped his interest in how people can build more freedom, resilience and connection into their lives.

His experience spans founding and leading teams across cultures, personal vision work, Nonviolent Communication and AI-enabled operations. At Mycelium Hub, he brings together regenerative living, open-source technology and community infrastructure, building the practical systems that turn ideas into things people can use.

We didn’t design this from theory. We built it by living it.

Why mycelium

Mycelium is the network of fine threads that grows through soil and wood. Some fungi form partnerships with trees and plants, exchanging nutrients; others break down fallen wood into nourishment for what grows next. These relationships connect living things, while decomposition makes material from what has ended available for new growth.

In our own lives, a career, role or way of living can stop fitting without everything it gave us becoming worthless. Part of the work is deciding what to let go of, what to carry forward and how to use what we have learned to build what comes next. Community gives us people to work through those questions with, and practical support to act on them.

That is how we approach regeneration: making room for renewal without assuming we have to start from zero. Restoring energy, strengthening relationships and turning experience into something useful, for ourselves and for others.

The network also shapes how we organise. People share knowledge, contribute what they can and help each other move forward. We build systems that do not depend entirely on one location, platform or provider. We build for antifragility: learning from disruption and using what we learn to strengthen the network, without giving up what matters.

Nature as a teacher

Nature is not decoration in this story. It is one of the teachers.

The hub grew in the Swedish forest, shaped by the seasons, the land and the slower pace of living systems. That environment shaped the work as much as any plan. People came to work on projects, rethink their direction and find their footing alongside others. Walks, shared meals and conversations by the fire were part of that work: time to think, exchange ideas and build relationships beyond a screen.

The forest offered a different pace from the demands of digital life. It gave people room to pay attention, think things through and work without constant interruption. We carry that balance of focused work, shared life and time outdoors into what we build elsewhere.

What we mean by sovereignty

Some people call this sovereign living. We mean something practical: real choices about how you earn, where you live, which tools you use and who you build with. Owning the things that matter, so one change does not knock everything over. Being able to act, not only react.

Over time, the work began to travel. Pop-ups and gatherings took us to the UK and Mexico. Our online community, Spore Society, brought people together across countries. Spore Journeys, our podcast, became our public voice.

So far, our in-person gatherings for 2027 are planned in Paraguay and Canada.

Sweden remains where it started. The next chapter goes where the network is growing.

How we work

We are still experimenting, and we say so. We would rather share what we have learned than hand out advice, and we would rather be useful than impressive. We stay curious, because the questions keep changing. We put relationships before transactions and trust before scale. We look for growth that restores rather than extracts. We learn most when our ideas meet yours.

“Mycelium Hub helped me unlock the power of networks, my own and others’. It’s a place where you’re encouraged to ask for help, collaborate, and turn ideas into reality. As AI reshapes traditional roles, Mycelium Hub offers a space to explore human skills that can’t be automated. This community supports a more purposeful life through genuine connection and self-discovery.”
